We are excited to announce the latest release of Zenith traffic volume data from Veitch Lister Consulting (VLC).
The following Zenith datasets are now available to purchase either through our Planwisely web-based platform or as a standalone GIS layer:
- Zenith Traffic Estimates - estimates of weekday traffic volumes by time of day (latest release is v10 – covers July 2019 to February 2020)
- Zenith Vehicle Speeds - an estimate of the average speed of vehicles by time of day
- Zenith Traffic Counts - a compilation of openly available traffic count sources around Australia.
Zenith Traffic Estimates is the most widely used source of traffic volume estimates in Australia and provides our clients with market-leading intelligence on how people move around a city to help inform site selection decisions. Unlike publicly available traffic counts, Zenith Traffic Estimates is dynamic and regularly updated, providing traffic volumes estimates at a link level for all major metropolitan areas in Australia.
Zenith Traffic Estimates is built from a broad range of inputs, and decades of transport modelling expertise from VLC. Some of the information used to derive and validate the estimates include:
- Detailed computational representation of the transportation network
- Household travel surveys conducted by state governments
- Census data
- Public transport route information
- Parking price data
- Toll road usage data
- Educational enrolment data
- Airport passenger data
- Car ownership data
- Tourism data
- Current traffic count data (with/without vehicle classification)
- Public transport patronage data (boardings/alightings)
Zenith Traffic Estimates is available as a Basic or Advanced dataset. Basic includes an estimate of the average weekday volume on any road segment, whereas Advanced separates out the traffic volumes into the direction of travel and the time of travel (AM peak, interpeak, PM peak). The travel volume estimates relate to an average weekday during school term time between July 2019 and February 2020.

Did you know that a number of publicly available traffic counts contain errors of some kind, usually due to a fault with the equipment? Zenith Traffic Counts is a unique dataset provided by our data partners VLC, and available for the majority of metropolitan Australia. VLC sifts through all available public traffic counts and spends a significant amount of time cross-checking each count against historical counts, and expected volumes based on counts in the area. Counts that are found to be faulty are sifted out of the dataset, or flagged for further observation.
